1971 Cutlass S 350 CC engine - Positive CrankCase Ventilation Valve and a Charcoal Canister were about the only pollution devices installed. The exhaust smelled awful, even on a properly tuned motor.

Believe it or not, way back in the 50’s, car emissions were reduced by about 90% by the “Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve” better known as the PCV valve.
When an engine is running, there is oil blow by ( pressure build up in the oil of the engine). This oil blow by had been vented below the car and into the air. The PCV valve controlls this pressure build up and circulates the oil cloud back into the engine.) We have been working on cleaning the remaining emissions up every since.
Why am I talking about emissions? Today’s cars do not smell bad when running and appear to be safe to run in a closed environment, like our garage attached to our house – No smell – no harm- right?
Yes, we have cleaned the tail pipe emissions up considerably, but not good enough. to run inside your garage with the doors closed.
Recently a friend of mine went to help his buddy. He had a project in his home garage. The vehicle had been started and stopped several times, but since today’s cars run so much cleaner, his buddy apparently had not noticed the build up of fumes.
My friend came in later and noticed his buddy was having a tough time staying awake. At first he didn’t notice, but soon the effects of the carbon monoxide were having an effect on him too. He recognized what was happening and they both ended up in the hospital for treatment.
His friend later stated “he would not be alive today if he would have been left alone”.
The safety tip here is obvious: open your garage door if you are going to run your vehicle before you leave; better yet park your ride outside. The carbon monoxide gas will enter your home and circulate for a long time, not exactly good for your family.
Today's automobile do run much cleaner, even the oil has changed to reduce emmissions. Some of the common lubricants have been removed, Zinc for example. Custom building an oil has become mor feasable. We have changed many of ourregular customers to Amsoil OE Full Synthetic Oil, because it meets there demands the best at a lower cost.
