If you own a Ford truck before 1996, as I do, you know all about the power steering wine these trucks make on a cold day start-up. My faithful 1996 F150 is no different. I wondered if there was something that I could do about the wine. As an Amsoil Independent Dealer, it seemed to be a no-brainer to look to Amsoil. I have learned Amsoil Full Synthetic Lubricants lubricate much better and are typically outstanding in colder temperatures.
When I start my truck on a morning with below-freezing temperatures, the power steering always wines for what seems to be a minute or two. As the temperature dips, the noise lasts even longer. (my automotive years have told me this is normal for these trucks) The noise does not seem to hurt the pump, but you have to wonder, "why not!"
I found Amsoil recommends their Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid SAE 10w as the power steering replacement fluid. I flushed the power steering fluid with Amsoil Super Shift and proceeded to drive the truck for a few days before I did the following video.
I had forgotten about the power steering fluid swap until a few days ago when the weather dropped below freezing. I had started my truck as usual but noticed something was different. I recorded the following video with the temperature around freezing. Note, It has been two years since the previous video:
After listening to the first video and then the second, you can tell a significant difference. Yes, the temperature was not as cold (I will be adding another experiment when temperatures dip to 10 degrees or so), but the wine is much less severe than two years ago.
This experiment is an excellent reminder to run Amsoil Full Synthetic Lubricants and give Amsoil Lubricant a chance to treat the moving parts. As I have learned, Amsoil has continued to perform as advertised - why am I not surprised!
My experiment is not scientific but my personal experience only. Your results may vary according to many different factors!
