The other day, a friend and I traveled to a nearby town. Our goal was to clean a throttle body, fix his granddaughter's Jeep, and turn off the annoying Service Engine Soon light.
The throttle body controls the air going into your engine. When you step on the gas, a flat plate in the throttle body opens more and more as you push the accelerator down, thus allowing more air in the engine and increasing power output.
The tiny dirt particles in the air collect and restrict the throttle plate from closing correctly, causing the "Service Engine Soon" light to turn on. There was a time when cleaning the throttle plate was no big deal. However, we discovered with the Jeep that the throttle requires a reset procedure to work correctly after cleaning. The point is to have the throttle and idle control valve cleaned about every 50,000 miles to maintain optimum operation.
