Typically, we inspect coolant level & protection level in the fall. That's a good idea, but summer coolant protection is just as important. But, you knew that too. Years ago, we would add antifreeze and only be concerned that we had a 50/50 mix. As with all things automotive, that has changed also. The 50/50 mix has stayed the same, but that's about all. I am sure our local parts store has at least four different types of antifreeze! When, purchasing Do Not just go by the color of the coolant; be sure it is for your car.
The manufacturer brand, such as Toyota, BMW, etc, determines the required type. The general requirement appears to be European, Asian, Japanese, or US-made. To add to the confusion, each American manufactures have their own type. What surprises me is that there is a "fits all universal" type such as Amsoil Universal Antifreeze  #ANTPC1G.
Is this a marketing ploy, or is this for real? Actually, manufacturers do not recommend universal antifreeze for a complete refill. However, when adding, a universal coolant will work just fine. When replacing the coolant, be safe. read the label on the bottle before replacing it to ensure it is correct for your car.
I was asked, "What is the difference in coolants." For example, the BLUE coolants used by Asian and European manufacturers are not interchangeable; Asian OEMs forbid Silicates and approve Phosphates, while Europeans include Silicates but forbid Phosphates. The take - the coolants are different, so don't gamble with the recommended coolant when performing a complete coolant service.
As always, when in doubt ask a professional. And no, in most casrs you do not have to purchase your coolant from the car dealer, the aftermarket has you covered in most cases.
