Too often, I hear the phrase, “Oil is just oil!” That's like saying, “All cars are the same!”   Without getting complicated, we will explain the fundamental difference between “conventional oil” and “ synthetic oil."
Let's say you have a gallon container filled with equal parts of small plastic triangles, squares, and balls. Then we have another container filled with equal amounts of a couple of different-sized balls. Now, let's attempt to pour the plastics out of the containers. Which one do you think will pour out the quickest - The balls of similar size balls or the squares and triangles etc.?
If you picked the “balls,” you would be correct. The difference between conventional oil and synthetic oil is the molecules in synthetic oils are more of the same size and shape. Because of this similarity, synthetic oil will lubricate moving parts better because these molecules can move by each other easier.
This a very simplified explanation, there is much more to the differences.
Please remember, as in all things automotive, “you get what you pay for.”Some pass ASE certification, but the price typically reflects the quality.
